anyone have any idea what kind of steel this brand might use? Picked up a nice one for about $10 at a pawn shop. Going to make a knife from it if it's not case hardened mild steel. Thanks for any help. Google didn't give me much on it.

It should not be case hardened.

I have given away many hoof files to knife makers, never got a single complaint, even from the no-name chinese made files.
