Kid shoots at road sign... kills Marine sitting on porch

An important safety rule is to not only look at your target but what's behind it. Guess this kid missed that. I've never shot up a sign either. Negligence with firearms are life altering for everyone involved. Kids life is screwed now. So awful for the family of the deceased for such a man to die in such an unnecessary, stupid way.

Most gun owners (maybe not most NRA members, not most ODT registered users, but most casual gun owners) are blissfully ignorant of the concept of a backstop. Just shooting "into the woods" or "into that field" is good enough for them. They don't see the difference between the danger range of a load of #8 birdshot from a shotgun and a .45 pistol round or even a 7mm Rem Mag rifle bullet. They assume that if there's grass and weeds behind your target, the bullet will stop in the grass and weeds.

There's the fourth rule of gun safety right there.
  1. Always assume / treat all guns like they're loaded
  2. Don't point the gun at anything you don't want to destroy
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until sights are on target, ready to shoot
  4. Know what your target is and what's beyond it
