I buy lady bugs and praying mantises every spring to put out on whatever vegetable garden she plants. I wished I could get them to overwinter, but they fly off when the food runs out. You should get some praying mantis eggs, the boys would probably enjoy watching them hatch out.

The dog found a praying mantis laying eggs (didn't disturb it) - in the treads of the tire on my car.
When she was gone, I moved them to a cardboard box nearby. Don't think they ever hatched.
