I'm debating between a French Brittany or Boykin Spaniel. Looking to have a dog to take on the hunt or in the boat. I'm kind of leaning towards the Boykin due to they seem to be a closer range dog and a little less energetic but not sure how much of a difference there is between them. I like the idea of the French because they are less prone to flush and seem more task specific oriented as opposed to general purpose. Looking to take it hiking and doing outdoors stuff mostly, but would like to take into the fields so to speak too I have no experience with either breed so any experience you have is appreciated.

Don't know anything about the French Brittany but had a Boykin for 17 years. Absolutely dumb as a box of rocks. Made a special trip to a breeder over in SC to get the pup thinking that would be a solid blood line. Nope, he would take off whenever he got the notion from his first day till his last day, had to keep inside a fenced yard. YMMV, good luck

What kind of hunting are you thinking about? Boykins are better in the water if ducks are in play. They also are much more natural retrievers. Both can/will flush, Brittany’s will point and not many Boykins do. I’ve got two Boykins and just sent home a litter of 9. Been around a lot more while training. I can tell you a ton about Boykins. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk further.

☝What he said.

Also, in general Boykins have a tendency to be more personable and affectionate. Brits are more hard-core hunters.

Both of those statements are generalities that there are often exceptions to.

I would also look into the english springer I hang around 2 at deer camp that are smarter than most people, both are used as flushing dogs.
If you look at Springers, make sure they come from a line of field dogs, not pets. Too many behavioral issues (aggression) with pet line Springers.

Definitely French Brittany for me.
