Mid-life career change... What would you change to?

I'm just curious. I've lost my passion for my field and have grown to resent it. Looking to hit the reset button. I won't set limitations on suggestions so that someone else may benefit who is not in my exact shoes.

Going back to school is ok to achieve the goal.
I’m guessing you are in law enforcement. If I didn’t have a family, I’d move to the coast and get a job as an able bodied seaman. Either on a cargo ship or working on a tugboat.

I'm a 5th generation rancher on the same land my family has owned since 1896. I'm in a rather good situation as far as the way my brother and I operate the ranch as there are no land payments, we have almost 1500 cows that we raised and as far as a yearly operation note there is none. So you can probably look at my situation and say that I'm in a very lucrative position.
I'm 51 years old and if I had to have a mid life career change it would be from rancher to dad.
For the last 30 years I thought I had to be this hard ass, daylight to dark, gotta get it done today if we started it kind of person. I missed lots of school programs, ballgames, birthday parties and the majority of those special moments when my daughters needed their daddy.
Don't get me wrong i have a good relationship with my daughters and am extremely proud of their abilities from working calves, burning pasture, riding some tough colts and horses to dressing up formally and being beautiful young ladies. They can do such a wide variety of things.
It's taken me way to long to realize that work will always be there in the morning if we don't finish it today. I'll never get back the special moments or events I missed but I cant change the past, I just need to work on the future.

I'm in the same boat.
That's ok, that is why I left that info out. I wanted a wide array in case someone else was in the same boat. Since this post is a little buried, I'll go ahead and come out with it... I'm in the medical field.

I am in the same situation, but a bit different. I am a firefighter paramedic injured on the job. Had surgery and now have a permanent disability. I was "released" by my county citing "inability to perform essential job functions". I am in my mid 30's and only have mechanical trades background, that I will never be able to do again.. I've been burned out and wished I never ventured into public safety or medicine.

I will say this....dont look a gift horse in the mouth. The need for healthcare will never go away. Go PRN if need be and do something you want to do and work whatever job you have on the side.

My craft was a millwright. I got to travel as I wished. Different jobs, different cities/locations.
Ended up as a house cat at a local facility. Now enjoying retirement.
Something to remember, a person can control a process from a computer screen, but only a skilled technician can put hands on to repair it!

I've got 20 years until I call it quits working. Yes, I'm willing to do back to school! I do very well in school.
Depends on your skills

The company i work for has Had 9 people “shadow” me for a week at a time searching for someone who can learn to troubleshoot and repair Portable water treatment systems . machinery, vacuum pumps, water pumps air compressors etc
So far ONE has the potential to learn what I know.

so a lot is gonna depend on what your particular Intrests and skill sets are
And what if any, family commitments you have .
Wife?
Kids? Ages?
Just you and single?

Theres million different jobs in the Medical field

that doesn’t help us know what skills you have and what other possible occupations that might easily translate to
I recently spent a week in the hospital and if I was in the medical field I think I’d want to be the guy running the MRI machine or maybe the guy that installs them.

DNR is hiring for game wardens and the DOT Public safety is hiring truck inspectors,
The guys in the black vehicles that randomly pull over commmercial vehicles and inspect them.

I install and maintain portable water treatment systems and underground vapor extraction systems around leaky underground fuel tanks

For my job you have to be able to do plumbing and electrical troubleshooting and repair and installation work
Operate an excavator and loader,
Mostly just a souped up handyman , half mechanic, and half detective.

its easy to me , but half the people they’ve sent me to try out , couldn’t even figure out how to operate a ratchet strap, they sure as heck ain’t gonna be able to figure out why a treatment system is conked out and how to repair It so it’s back online again ASAP. No matter how much time I waste, uh, I mean spend teaching them.

we got one guy with a Masters degree in physics , but he’s put gasoline in a diesel truck twice.
