This will weaken Turkey and the region. Greece will benefit as the US will now have to strengthen our alliance with them (read: $) to aid our military efforts and bases.

I don't think it will be that bad. Still nighttime and only people out are regime supporters. Coup supporters will come out during the day and we have no idea what is happening in Ankara. Pretty telling that Erdogan went to Istanbul (where he isn't universally loved) instead of the Capital.

If the coup leaders have completely seized Ankara, it'll only be a matter of time before the government falls. Media blackout in Ankara suggests this to be the case. There is a reason why a bulk of the news has come from Istanbul in recent hours.

Very strategic piece of land. Has been that way for Centuries. The gateway between Europe and Asia. Russian fleet needs to pass through Turkish territory (Bosphorus) to reach their troops in Syria (naval base at Tartus). Those ships have to pass through Istanbul. NATO uses bases throughout Turkey. We use them directly.

Turkish government has been increasingly pushing towards an Islamic government. Military is held by Constitutional Decree to uphold secularism. Government policies towards the military in the past decade have been building towards this point. Crap finally hit the fan tonight.

From all conservative accounts the coup is good.

Erdogan has a radical past. Even spent time in prison for it. Now he's what the West likes to call a "moderate Muslim".
