I've had my Garand for about a decade and have only run modern ammo in it, but I've seen occasional things here and there that suggest it may damage the op rod. Is there any truth to this? What should I be using to ensure my rifle's safety and my own?

Thanks.

All I can add is that when my Springfield M1A was only 10 years old, and had been fired about 1500 times with full metal jacket military surplus ammunition or commercial equivalence (all 147 to 150 grain) but ALSO had maybe 80 rounds of 168 grain or 180 grain ammo fired through it, my operating rod broke.

I never knew why, and thankfully Springfield Armory replace the op-rod without charge to me. I understand that is a very expensive part if you have to pay for it yourself!

So, I'm just saying that an operating rod can break, and it did happen to me.

I put the ported gas plug in mine just to be sure, its cheap and easy insurance. I also got rid of any corrosive stuff that I had so I wouldn't mix it up and shoot it.
