Huge fan of the S&W 1911 E series. One of the best guns for that price range.

actually IF you think about it I believe that every semi auto weapon that was designed in the early 1900's were designed to operate on so called Ball ammo, simply because that is all that was available in those times.
Interestingly about every Firearm from the 1700's was designed to work on Black Powder!!---GriiiiN.

True, and other, more modern guns are better suited for modern ammo. The reason ball ammo is prevalent to the 1911 discussion is because it is by far the most popular 100+ year old design still being used in the 21st century mainstream of things.

of course todays 1911 isn't the same one browning put on the table, even his initial design was soon changed with the A-1 version.
and the progression has continued through today.
Even the Mil Spec isn't a true browning design.
MY point is just because a hundred plus years ago a weapon was designed to operate on what then was the norm doesn't mean that today that's still the case.
