Let me clear the smoke grenade that has been thrown, I am not CURRENTLY eligible for a GWL. If I was a felon I wouldn't be filling out 4473's. I don't have a sling because I cant find one to put on it. Im pretty certain that an AR-15 or SIG 556 are rifles, but the 16'' barrels that Georgia somehow doesn't fit into their statutes wouldn't make me a happy camper to get arrested over 2 inches of metal. But as I said if you fill out a 4473 and it asks is the person purchasing a handgun or long gun, a carbine length rifle is still a long gun at the end of the day. IANAL!!!!

It may be his right ...but it's the wrong that could follow that could have him dead. Police confront him and he makes a wrong move and he's shot. Couple hoodlums decide to jump him and take the rifle, mayhbe they shoot him maybe not. Anyway you look at it...it's inviting trouble. Isn't that why we have CCW permits for us law abiding citizens. I'm new here and don't want to make any enemys...just expressing my view.

What statue are you referring to? A standard AR with a 16in barrel is considered a rifle and can be open carried if you want to. A shotgun on the other hand must have a barrel length of 18in.

Im not trying to give you a hard time and I'm all for open carry but in the future if you insist on carrying a rifle openly down the road PLEASE get a sling first. Carry a presumably loaded rifle in your hands is just begging for trouble.

Weapon - Are defined as a handgun or a knife (except 16-11-127.1 which has its own definition for weapon). (16-11-125.1)
Handgun - A firearm of any description, loaded or unloaded, from which any shot, bullet, or other missile can be discharged by an action of an explosive where the length of the barrel, not including any revolving, detachable, or magazine breech, does not exceed 12 inches; provided, however, that the term 'handgun' shall not include a gun which discharges a single shot of .46 centimeters or less in diameter (since the term "shot" is used instead of "bullet", a pistol that fires .17HMR would be considered a handgun). (16-11-125.1)
Knife - A cutting instrument designed for the purpose of offense and defense consisting of a blade that is greater than five inches in length which is fastened to a handle (designed for offense and defense means that something like a filet knife would not be included). (16-11-125.1) Long gun - A firearm with a barrel length of at least 18 inches and overall length of at least 26 inches designed or made and intended to be fired from the shoulder and designed or made to use the energy of the explosive in a fixed:
(A) Shotgun shell to fire through a smooth bore either a number of ball shot or a single projectile for each single pull of the trigger or from which any shot, bullet, or other missile can be discharged; or
(B) Metallic cartridge to fire only a single projectile through a rifle bore for each single pull of the trigger;
provided, however, that the term 'long gun' shall not include a gun which discharges a single shot of .46 centimeters or less in diameter (since the term "shot" is used instead of "bullet", a rifle that fires .17HMR would be considered a long gun). (16-11-125.1)
