But owls make some funny noises too

Somewhere near the top of an old growth poplar tree about 70 feet high, presumably a bird of some sort, but sounded exactly like an elk call, and almost as loud. I have already googled, it was not a loon. What bird (presumably) would make this sound? I have spent plenty of time outdoors in GA and never heard this sound before except for episodes of Meat Eater where they call elk. An elk call is the closest thing I can compare it to.

Any ideas?

Could have been cumala harris getting it on.

Could be the Jersey Devil resting during his trip back north.
I have it on good authority he is the original snowbird, and this is their migration season.
