Found a Smith and Wesson model 66-1 in .357mag today on my birthday (46th).
Yes, I bought & no it's not going up for sale.
What I did not know till I got home was that it has the GA State Patrol symbol(?) etched/engraved into.
Anyone have any info on these 66-1's value/rarity/???.
serial # is 67K5559
I think it is from 1980.
Any info would greatly appreciated, Thanks.

That is a S&W 66-1 that was purchased by the Georgia State Patrol for use as an issued duty weapon. IIRC, GSP later switched to the L-frame 686, and then to a combo of the S&W 5906 and 4506 (Troopers’ choice).

There are folks that collect such marked LE trade-in guns, and they’ll usually pay a premium for them.

Several years back me & my dad had a friendly bet over a college football game.
He lost and the deal was he had to give up his Ruger Security-Six to me.
I think it's about time to "re-gift" (for lack of a better term) it back to him.
Especially since I got this score & a 686 w/ a 5in barrel a few months back.
Maybe take him to the range for his birthday (turns 75 on Feb 23rd.).

That's awesome story and yeah give pops back his Ruger!
Hopefully that forcing cone is in good shape and being an issued weapon, was carried more than shot.
The milled flat forcing cone on the 66 is always my first concern but otherwise a great little wheel gun.
I have a GSP marked Mod 28 but doesn't have the seal like yours. Def a cool piece of history.

Don’t think your dad is all broken up over losing that bet. I’m betting The Ruger went where he wanted to.

Thanks for the heads up on the cone.
I gave a glance at the cone and it appears to be in very good shape.
But, being the type person I am (seemed to sometimes be a magnet for trouble).
I will be taking it to a gunsmith friend who has worked a few of my guns that I
got used just to be safe.
