Need a new chainsaw and rather not take a second mortgage out...

I have a McCullouch that was supposedly junk. Don't think I paid much over $100. I think I bought it around 1995. So much for 'junk'. Mater of fact the engine is STILL going strong. The blasted oil reservoir busted. So I need a new chain saw.
Not going to be clearing the north 40 just light/moderate use. Old saw is a 16" It was fine for what I do but wouldn't mind a little bigger though don't "need" it. Can't justify dropping the coin on a Stihl.
Any of the sub $200 ones in that size worth anything? Any to avoid?

Just avoid ethanol gas if you can, otherwise use Stabil Ethanol treatment.

I think you can pick up a Stihl for under $200, I'd probably go that route after going through 3 cheapos over the last 10 years.

The $200 Stihls are REALLY lightweight. To get something from them comparable to what I have would be over $300.
I'll be treating the gas with Stabil. I really need to get better about that but I have a currently sick outboard that is a good reminder...

I purchased a like new but use 026 Stihl off the ODT for 100 bucks a couple of years ago. Best saw I have ever owned.

I craigslist stuff like that. I also second the Stihl saw. I've owned both McCullouch and Stihl; they are both good saws, but the Stihl is just better.

Expensive? Yes. But cheaper than new. You get a pretty nice new-ish saw that will last you forever.

Also I've got a REALLY old MS 029 saw. Heck it says, "Made in West Germany" on the side of it. Gosh darn good saw. I wouldn't shy away from an old Stihl as long as they didn't back over it with the truck.

Also be looking in the NE area of ATL. That is where I got mine. Guy let it go for next to nothing because it wouldn't run. All it needed was a cleaning, adjusting of the start switch, air filter, and the chain had NEVER been sharpened. Did all of that and the thing TORE THROUGH some oak. I think my dad is jealous.

Speaking of my dad, he has an Echo chainsaw that has done nothing but work. My goodness what an amazing chainsaw. Its like a Honda Accord. About as exciting as this pen sitting on my desk but it just works and gets the job done.
