Working on restoring my 1972 FJ40, and looking for someone in my area that knows them inside and out.
I'm in the NWGA area, Rock Spring, Ringgold, Chattanooga area.

I don't know that I can be referred to, as what you describe but! I have taken a 1973 FJ40 inline 6, 3 speed, and turned it into a LT-350 fire breathing 18x44 monster tire mud eating animal, many years ago.

Well I used Downey automotive out of California for a lot of my parts, Don't know if that will help. But I do love the FJ40's good luck!

Downey closed down, IIRC.

Are you looking for parts sources, or for people to do the work?

http://accgarage.com/ in ATL is the local go to place for TLC's, but they ain't cheap.

For about all you can hope to learn, http://forum.ih8mud.com/ is the place, and for local TLC club, http://forum.ih8mud.com/forums/tn-stlca.132/

STLCA is near Chattanooga.

Join Ih8mud.com and look on their vendors pages and the classifieds for parts

I know them o.k. and have been wheeling and wrenching Toyotas for 30 years. If I can help let me know.

Closed? Well it has been a lot of years since I used them. But sounds like you have found someone with current knowledge^^^^^use it and save a lot of time and heart ache!

Like SOLGardener said above, if you are not active on ih8mud, you need to be! There is a wealth of info there...anything you need to know is there, you just have to find it.

I buy a lot of my parts from two particular guys on mud. One of them is based in GA now. I ordered parts last Thurs and had them Monday. His nickname is Beno and you can find his info here:
http://www.landcruiserpartsandconsulting.com/ The other guy is Cdan, or CruiserDan, you can search for him on mud. Both guys will save you money and really know cruisers.

I'm an FJ60 and FJZ80 kinda guy, but I trip across 40 parts all the time. If you need used parts I might be able to help you locate it locally.

Also, one of my best friends has a '73 that is a survivor. If you need pics of anything in particular let me know and I'll get them.

I use ACC for everything on my Cruisers, and they're honestly not that expensive. They have always been very fair and flexible with me.

I put a Downey Offroad 3" lift on my 82 Toyota and it was great. My recollection is that as the internet came on, they just didn't embrace it and got a little left behind. The Toyota shops like Specter put up website and kept going.

I took the leaf springs on the rear and inverted them by mounting on top of the Axel housing. Fabricated brackets to reattach. Also use square tubing underneath the springs between the axle tube.
