back of the receiver, behind the rear sight almost looks like the serial number has been scrubbed. During rebuilds some stations were to put the serial number in front of the rear adjustable sight as the sight made it hard to read in it's normal postion (my 6 digit Inland has this feature) . 1821 serial , if it is a GI, would be a very early Inland carbine. You need to really get under that rear sight and see if there is anything there. If you would like I will be just east of Woodstock down 92 on Saturday helping at a charity flea market (set up) and I can tell you all you need to know about it, I specialize in M1 carbines.
