I would like a shotgun for house protection.
I am looking at a pump, 20 gauge with an 18.5" barrel.
Which one do you think is the best and economical?

Thanks for any help

$218.29 out the door

Get a 12ga and use reduced recoil/manager recoil ammunition. You'll get the recoil of a 20ga with a better payload, and it's usually cheaper/easier to find a decent 12ga shotgun.

pump action shotguns are hard to mess up, even the cheap imported ump-action models work well. you could buy a used model if you can find a cheap mossberg 500 or remington

I am new at this soooooo
Is reduced recoil ammo as powerful as regular? Could you explain the advantages of buying a 12 ga & using this ammo vs a 20ga with regular ammo?

Reduced/managed recoil 12ga ammo has less recoil than standard loads, but still has plenty of power for use as a defense load......that's exactly what it's designed for. Most LE agencies use reduced recoil loads in their pump action shotguns and it's what I use in all of mine.

Reduced recoil 12ga ammo has recoil similar to a full-load 20ga, but holds much more shot (or a larger slug).

In terms of reliability, pump vs semi-auto, here's the conclusion I've come to from 20+ years of teaching defensive shotgun course; most malfunctions with pump actions are due to user error, while most malfunctions with semi-autos are due to ammo.
