Need some info on deciding first handgun purchase

Shoulder holster is fine with or without jacket as long as you have your GWL. Just make sure you read up on the laws and know where you can't legally carry. FYI, liberals may be offended by open carry regardless of how legal it is.

I'm really hoping someone can point me in the direction of where I can go to shoot a glock 21 gen 4 and a M&P both in .45 so I know which one I feel best with.

First off thank you and your Misses for answering the call of duty. Your choices will be currently limited to available stock. Academy in on the South Side had a few Glocks to choose from. They had some others as well. The Smith and Wesson M&P series are real good guns. Consider others as well such as FN, HK, and Ruger etc.

As a carry sidearm a full size .45 double stack anything is going to be a heck of a chunk to hide. Slim single stacks are much easier to conceal but limit your round count. The 1911 will carry better when considering a full size. The Glock 36 or Springfield's slim single stack .45 are real decent choices for .45's to carry but you don't seem interested.

Check with Autrey's Armory for rentals and also Forest Park's public range as well.

The pro is .45 will be as effective in ball ammo as some of the others will be with premium hollow point ammo. The con is it is a bigger package to hide or carry. Really!

Be sure to handle any pistol you are interested in. The hand fit and balance are most important. Then get a caliber that will stop the target cold.

If you have extensive experience with a Beretta m9 (DA/SA) then a glock or other striker fired pistol may have a learning curve. Not to say they're bad pistols(which they aren't) but the triggers are just different. For a quicker fix I would check out the fnp/fnx 45 or Sig p220. Sig showed off a p227 at shot show but it won't be out for a couple of months. The p227 would give you a lot more mag capacity than a 220 but both are fine firearms. I owned a fnp previously and it was amazing. I shot tighter groups with it than most 9mm that I own. I'm not trying to steer you away from glock because I do like them. But it took me a while to become proficient with the design after owning czs and sigs before.

I carry the XD9sc and love it, I own a Glock and an M&P too. Beretta has the PX4 and they're excellent pistols. Ruger has the SR series, very impressive.. My personal favorite is the XD, nothinbg fits the hand as comfortably as one.

I carry a compact Rock Island Armory 1911. I use a Versa-Carry rig. This in not something that is convenient to pull and then re-holster. But if I have to pull...and believe me, I pray that I never do...

All that being said, I wish I had a range I could recommend for you. It really is best to test-fire before you purchase. I'd rather someone be able to put 10 .22 LR in a 2" circle at 7 yds in 2 seconds than 7 .45acp in an 24" circle. But that's just me. I think shot placement trumps caliber any day (and twice on Sunday).

If you're comfortable with 9mm then stick with that caliber. Recoil is manageable and you can get some great self-defense ammo. Go fondle some guns at your local shop and try to find the one that is the most comfortable. I'm thinking this should be your choice.

Best of luck!

Once you pick one up, post up a range report!
