I'm getting a new hunting rifle, which I have picked out, and am looking for a scope to match. I'd like a 3-9x50 and am on a college student budget. Looking to keep it at or below $200. The Nikon Prostaff and Bushnell trophy xlt are at the top of my list at this point, but am looking for other suggestions. I don't know much about optics so any help/ reccomendations are appreciated! This will be going on a Ruger M77 compact once I get that...

Thanks in advance!

Do your research? A 50mm+ objective, especially on a 1" tube lower priced scope is pretty much a wast of money.

Dig deep, don't just listen to what folks say on here. Spend the money on quality instead of quantity. A bigger objective, doesn't translate into better performance.

This is true and why I went with the 40mm

I appreciate the suggestion. Like I said, I don't know much about optics, so I appreciate the input!

I was thinking the same thing a semi decaent 3-9x40 is gonna serve you much better that a 50mm supereconoscope. Give one of these a look. The Burris FF2 One of the best values going under $200 with a serious warranty.http://www.midwayusa.com/product/28...-scope-3-9x-40mm-ballistic-plex-reticle-matte I'm pretty sure bass pro has one on the shelf you can look through but I think they're priced a good bit higher.

I checked it out. I actually used the M77 compact opening weekend (a friend let me try it) and it had a burris scope on it. I'm not sure what model it was, but it was really nice. I searched Burris originally, but must have over looked the FF2. Everything else was out of my range. Thanks!

Cabelas has the Bushnell Elite 4200 3X9X40 on sale right now for less than $200. I have one and it is the best riflescope I've ever owned. I also have a Nikon Prostaff 3X9X40 and it doesn't compare to the Bushnell.

I also recommend going with the 40mm objective over the 50. If you spend the money on good glass, a good 40 will gather as much light as a mediocre 50.
