Sorry Clarke, my response was to the OP concerning safety of the shorter rounds.

Not a problem, strange things can happen when reloading, that's why being vigilant and spotting them can save you a lot of grief ... there is always a reason for things that happen; a reason that may take time to determine. That's one of the best reasons for sharing the problem here on the forum: LOTS of friends to help you!

Your advice is spot-on; projectile shape along with seating die stem shapes are sometimes incompatible and can produce inconsistent results. Further, some firearms simply choke on certain bullet profiles. This is especially true during break-in of a new auto-loading pistol! It seems that when you stray from the traditional Round-Nose profile and established COAL, you really need to check out a sample before loading up a bunch of them .. Your pistol may hate them! This, even though you drop test me beforehand ... failures to feed, failures to go into battery, and failures to eject can still happen ...
