New hunting project..

I’ve done lowers but never messed with a upper before. What length barrel should I go with? I won’t be making any shots past 200 yards

12 - 16" for the barrel. If you are running a can, I'd definitely go 12". Pretty simple to put together if you have the tools, and you'd still come out ahead even if you have to purchase the tools.

Edited to add I just checked out the 65grendel forums, and they have a Lilja group buy going now, and you can add a bolt. Not sure how much you want to spend, but that's a nice barrel. You can see the other group buys they've had as well, and you can easily get into a bolt/barrel for around $200.

1. 6.5G

2. .300BO

Good uppers from aero, Daniel defense, seekins precision, rock river arms, and then grand daddy of the 6.5 Alexander arms. To name a few. I have a .300BO rock river arms that I like a lot and (don’t lynch me) a PSA 6.5G.

for .300B0, assuming you want a rifle, I would do 16 inches max. For the 6.5G anywhere from 16-20 will serve you well.
