New Neighbors

What are they good for?
Ive been debating getting one for house o A small tract of 6 acres

I love the roaming cats. I didn't appreciate them until my neighbor's cat died. A couple weeks later I started seeing rat crap in my garage. I did all kinds of stuff to get rid of the rat problem. It wasn't solved until another cat started roaming the area. They stay out of my back yard because of the dogs but the presence seems to be enough to keep the rodents at bay.

Edit: for an outside cat you can try to rehome a feral cat. I tried but they don't always stick around. Mine took off.

I used to have 2.5 acres. From my experience, TWO outside cats are preferable. They tend to stay home-based and not rove too far, they keep each other company, and they like to play with prey between them. If you haven't seen two cats play with a chipmunk or similar between them while they lay on the grass, you've missed something. BTW, they didn't kill it. Poor little Chipmunk did the possum routine and stayed still when they 'presented' it to me on my doorstep...

If its not hurting anything leave it alone, we have an outside cat and even on 3 acres and he's fixed, he still checks things out next door on occasion. My cat is pretty dang cool, was literally raised around dogs and acts just like one....without the barking and leg humping.

Mine kills snakes likes no ones business. Always leaves them at the front or garage door for us.

I shot a cat one time with a C02 powered .357 pellet gun at about 50 feet in the buttocks. That thing jumped 5 feet up in the air. Funniest thing i'd ever seen. I feel bad now that the statute of limitations has passed. Man, wish we had video but that wasn't a thing in the 80s. Got pulled over sometime later and a cop found the pellet gun under the seat of my car and lectured me for 15 mins on how that could get me killed.

Our first starter home, had an apartment complex behind it, the old owners, old folks, fed all the cats. The day we moved in, we counted 17 different cats around the house. Catahoula had the time of her life and I was out there with a shovel the next day. I looked like Santa with that big bag toting them out of the yard.

It's the "the cat upsets his dog thing." Nobody likes to hear all that barking.
