can you use 7.62x39 in a 7.62x54 gun or other way around. been told the .308 is the same too ?

No problem... Wish I had all three cases here that I could line up an show you the difference but suffice to say that they are all very different and cannot be used interchangeably

While all .30 caliber (bullet diameter), the cases, pressures, etc are all vastly difference. Even still, metric/Russian calibers are .311 in bullet diameter while your American cartridges are .308 in diameter.
In the image below, you have 7.62x54R on the left, 7.62x51mm/.308 in the middle and 7.62x39 Russian on the right.

If you do that you will do it (2) twice your first and last time.
