You already said the best advice, try to contact the NRA yo see about a lawyer. That's about his only hope, a public defender is no good especially a Yankee public defender defending a southerner

Plaxico was rich and had a great lawyer and got locked up for 2 years. This dude might get a decade.

So i got a buddy of mine, pulled a dumba$$ move. He drove to NYC (Manhattan) from GA to see some old friends and he isnt from NY. He drove into town with a revolver. He gets pulled over for broken headlights and they asked to search his car. As ignorant as he is, he figured he had nothing to hide. They find his empty revolver, locked up in a secured case. Bullets were in the trunk.

He gets tossed in jail and charged with a felony possession. Apparently, Manhattan has special laws about having a revolver. He sits in Jail for a week and they let him off with a scheduled court date in mid June.

I did some reading and it seems like he can be up the creek. He has a public defender that hasnt returned his calls and he is broke as hell and certainly cant hire anyone decent.

I told him to call NRA to get some sort of read on what's gonna happen on his court date.

Can y'all weigh in and give me some advice?

Manhattan does NOT has special laws about revolvers. NYC itself does have different firearm laws from the rest of NY however. NYC does have extremely restrictive concealed carry issuing licenses. (Forget it if you ain't famous or a cop, and that does not include retired Police. Yeah..) so him not having a pistol license is Felony Possesion of a weapon. He is in ****s creek now, especially with the "SAFE act in effect. A guy is facing 21 years right now for have a standard capacity (17 round) glock magazine.

I moved here from NY almost a year ago now. It's like escaping from prison...

I know a few good lawyers in NYC, but unfortunately they are expensive as hell and don't do pro bono cases.

Don't know if you can join US Law Shield and have some type of retroactive policy?

NY blows when it comes to gun laws. A salesman at a gun shop on LI refused to let me handle a pistol because I did not have a NY drivers license. Acted like I had the freakin plague.

Update....
Thanks everybody for your response. My friend contacted the NRA and the referred him to 2 attorneys. They start with a $5000 retainer. So he's now trying to raise the $.

I'm from Brooklyn and I was just in New York City, in the past you got a year for a gun and if loaded 2 years. Your, friend is headed to a Prison called Rikers Island.

Do not even fly commercial with a gun in checked baggage if there is even a remote chance the plane might divert to NY .

I just spoke to a child-good friend of mine who is a Correction 's Officer in New York City, he said your friend is looking at a year in jail for the empty gun and a month for every bullet. If, they don't charge him for the bullets he's out in 6 months on good behavior in Rikers Island.
