You want the old dog to train the new dog. My girl is 9 and this summer we are going to look for the next one. I want Rosie to train the next dog. How to use the doggie door etc etc etc. She was trained by other older dogs as was her friend that was 10 when she crossed the rainbow bridge. Rosie is pretty healthy and I am sure will last another 5 or more years.

LOL nah, she is supposed to be a pug. We feel certain she is a pug and something else. We have no idea what else. She is the best dog ever. She was happy when her friend the pug passed. Now she is the alpha dog. It made me sad.
Dasie was with us ten years and because of human food ended up diabetic.
Insulin shots twice a day. It started out $100 a month for insulin then we found out walmart sells Humulin N for $25.00 so that helped but we spent THOUSANDS on Daisie.

Rosie kinda looks like a pugle (pug/beagle) mix.

With that sore toe, I'm sure that you will find all the furniture slightly out of place the next couple of days. Mashed a few nails off in my time and they always hurt.
