Old truck patina - can it be clear coated?

I picked up a 1983 C10 recently as a father and 15 yr old son project. I was going to sand it down and Maaco it in a solid red or black. My son is crazy about it as it sits now. Warts and all. His buddies think it's "cool". I'm fine NOT spending the effort and time to get it painted as he will be the one driving it anyway. Can a worn finish be clear coated to protect it and slow the erosion of what's there now or is that a waste of time and money?

He likes the "wet look".

I like that color. I think if you treated it well enough to get whatever is loose off and stabilize the rest you could. I think that's what they do to a rat rod.

you can clear coat in a high gloss or a matt I prefer the high gloss

Yes it can be clear coated. I have seen it done a couple of times. There is a newbie here that is a painter of the cars, he’s a good guy to boot. Let me look up his name and I’ll post it
