I am waiting on a picture of the other side of this pistol. He says the other side has an eagle and swastika on the slide. The guy is in his 70s and says this was his fathers bringback.
    Any ballparks on value?

If it’s real, it’s a bunch. Never believe the story. Unless there is paperwork with it. I’d say $800 or so for a REAL p38 not a post war. Like my P1 80s

    Has it been polished/nickel-plated?

    Nickel plated. Says it's a 1943 CVO.

That would bring the value way down

Let me start by apologizing for not knowing a single thing about P38s. Is the value decreased due to the fact that Walther didn't nickel plate any of these at the factory?

    Yep, original condition is prized.

    If untouched $500-$800.

    Nickel plated about $400

43 BYF, (which is Mauser). Plated, maybe $400 if the metal is good under the finish. Lots of P08s and P38s were plated in Germany after the war, usually traded the work for cigs etc.

It does tend to reduce the value quite a bit. The same was true of Russian 'dipped' guns, but now that seems to be recognized as a legitimate part of their history and prices have firmed, but still below original finish guns.

Thanks for the input. He has heard some ridiculous numbers on P38s and is, like me, curious about the wide range of pricing between $400 to $4000.

All depends on condition and model. When you get into the serious collecting side of P38's P08's, C96's, military 1911s etc some very specific things can make one gun worth several times more than one which is only slightly different. You can easily spend 5 figures on a rare variant of several of them.
