Not to take anything away from Phelps because he's a stud, but swimming is one of the only sports where it's possible to win that many medals. If you're Usain Bolt you can only really compete in the 100 and 200 as an individual. Swimming has tons of races of varying distances and swimming style.
He is amazing but sometimes the hype pushes the feat, and some credit needs to be shared. If you watched the 800m Freestyle you could have seen that his team mates gave him such a lead that anyone else on the team could have finished up and got the gold. MP was worn out from his butterfly, but the star got to be on the team who won the gold for him. The saddest part was, after he race all the media was on him, almost forgetting it was a team event.

Phelps is a genetic freak. He's that 1 in 10 million person that found a God given natural ability and focused on it. Amazing stuff whether you're a fan or not.
