Since I got back into firearms I've seen a shortage of 380 due to Ruger coming out with the LCP. Seen runs on ARs and MagPul mags after Sandy Hook. Also a years-long shortage of 22LR from that one too.

More recently we had 5.7x28 go away after Ruger came out with their 5.7. Every pistol and shotgun, as well as SD 9mm ammo disappear during the 'mostly peaceful' protests. That was followed up by pretty much every kind of powder and primer disappearing from the shelves.

So far most of these things haven't happened twice... the 2012-2013 run on ARs wasn't really the same scope as the shortage of them during the pandemic.

So what's the next 'must have' item we'll see disappear from store shelves during a panic of some kind?

My personal guess is 'range' ammo, specifically FMJ in 9mm and 5.56.

I think two wars and the global shortage of nitrocellulose feedstock will make producing anything but premium self-defense and hunting ammo just not cost effective. If it doesn't go for a buck a round it simply won't get made.

Guesses?

I think the problem with your "premium only" ammo theory is it keeps a lot of buyers away, including those new to the market. It's a bad long-term strategy.

And the Czechs, Serbs and Brazilians will play by their own rules and use the opportunity to take market share and build their brands. Look at the primer market. Exactly what's happening.

Same stuff it always is; AR’s, good defensive handguns, and ammo in popular calibers.

Always good to have a stock of ammo on hand. Get it NOW, and not when the supply goes down and prices go up.

Ever wonder why .380 ammo is one of the first rounds to dry up? Companies load .380 and 9mm on the same machines. 9mm is much more popular then .380. When there’s a run on ammo, companies stop loading .380 and concentrate on churning out as much 9mm as possible. The .380 ammo that was already in the system at the start of the craziness is all that will be available for quite some time.

AR’s dry up first. Then folks can’t get AR’s, so they snatch up the other carbines that are similar, or shoot such rounds as 5.56, 7.62, and .308. PCC’s, and SMG-like pistols like the CZ Scorpion go at the same time.

Then it’s shotguns.

Handguns are mixed in there. 9mm’s go first, then the others follow. Starts with Glocks, and filters down to the other manufacturers.

I worked in this business during the Clinton AW ban. During the ban on Chinese arms and ammo. During the similar Russian ban. During the last elections.

4 years ago, I saw dudes in their 30’s-50’s trying to buy their first AR. What took you so long? The only ones I actually felt bad for were the ones that had just turned off age to buy their first weapon, and they were difficult to find, or outrageously expensive when they did.

Don’t wait until November to get what you should have already had.
