I’m typically a river trout N Ga type, never fished the ocean. I am visiting a friend in Brunswick later this month and I’ve been to the pier but this will be my first time fishing it. Would I be okay using my catfish rig? (Medium 20-30 lb rod/reel) what else should I bring besides a bait bucket and chair?

Primarily looking for eating fish to bring back home. Suggestions? Tips/tricks?

Your catfish rig should be fine with a few modifications.

First of all, I recommend braided line. If you get a fish run against the pylons, the barnacles will make quick work of your monofiliment. Braided atleast gives you a chance.

I also recommend a steel leader, cause there are all sorts of toothy fish in the ocean that can easily sever a regular line.

Sand fleas, shrimp, mullet, cut bait, and spots are all great baits for pier fishing. You should catch something with any of those.

When selecting a spot on the pier, I like to setup where I can cast my bait about 15 feet back from where the waves start to break.

When we lived down there we would walk the pier in St Simons or on Driftwood at Jekyll and it was always funny to me that there would be at leat ine pelican perched on the railing waiting on whatever you reeled in and didn't want.
I don't 3the first thing about fishing but as I recall folks used to say it was very good around Mudcat Charlies right at the Glynn/ McIntosh Co line. Either from the bridge on Hwy 17 or further i to Darien.

First stop - George's Bait. Buy your bait, the freshest live bait, here. CASH is king, and only accepted heads up. Read this first article to learn about the family bait shop. Amazing family, good folk.

What are you looking to catch, anything specific? Different fish inhabit different areas different times. You can land eating fish from the piers, docks, and surf in that area. Or you can land bait or release fish.

I second the recommendation on braid and steel leader. Circle hooks 2, 1/0, 3/0 sizes should cover your targets.

Honestly anything that’s good eating. I’m wide open on suggestions.
