Like jeep78 said...it's a cut down M&P38. Serial puts it at 1942-43.

Good user if it locks up and times right. $200 is an appropriate value IMO.

Smith and Wesson 38 special. I know it’s probably a 50s gun but not sure. Serial number is 888156. Don’t really know what else to look for

I think it is one of the last M&P’s built before WWII. I base this on the Standard Catalog of S&W second edition, p102. It refers to several being delivered to the USNCPC with serial numbers between 748000 and 760000. These were shiped in 1941. Yours being serial number 888156, would come after these and before the war at which time the “Victory” model was designated and the “V” was added as a prefix to the serial number.

I think your gun had a lanyard loop at one time—looking at the bottom of grip.
