This is my favorite post of all time from the old GON forum... have a look if you can stomach roast Possum.

:banana::banana:Step 1 Muddyfoots caught the possum a big one too. Step 2 Purge possum. We feed him or her out for two weks or so. Step 3 Build fire and get washpot full of water to 185 degress. Step 4 Dispatch possum. We do this our way ,but lets all do it as humantary as possible...

My mother , who is gone now, said that when she was young her father (he was born in 1900) would catch a possum pen it up and feed it cornbread and buttermilk for two weeks before killing it.
Her mother would cook it with sweet potatoes , Mama said she never ate it but tried the sweet potatoes.

That was my great grandfather's traditional birthday meal. His boys, would go possum hunting a few weeks prior to catch one to feed out. They made my grandmother the sack holder (a position of honor) on her first visit to meet the family. She was obviously a salty old broad as it didn't deter her from the engagement. Haven't thought about that story in years. Thanks for sharing.

Had an old field hand worked for the family down the road that loved possum. Boiled, then pan fried. Stench would lay you out. I was about 10 or 12 at the time.

He was always scouting out the Persimmon trees as his "catch" areas.
