Powders for short barrel .308?

From ODT recommendations (Chuckdog-I think) I just started using H322 for .223 loads for the metering abilities. It meters great and the results were very good for both bolt/gas-AR rifles (16"). It also does well in a 14" T/C Contender but I'm still playing around with that platform.

H322 goes up to 155 gn. bullets for .308 pistol loadings, consider it. Here is a link but I think you have to accept/click the waiver, then look up metal pistol loadings and drop down to .308. http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

Trying to find H322 or 35 for 223 , where did you pick them up?

On OAL I've heard trying .010 off the lans, however in the Remington 700 SPS with a 150 grain bullet I'm not sure how much will be left in the case to hold it straight. I'm already down below the cannelure by a bit...so all of you more experienced reloaders...how much bullet needs to be left in the case to keep accuracy (and safety)

In a factory sps, you'll probably never hit the lands and still be able to get them in the magazine. Load to mag length and let it fly.

A Remington factory barrel has too much free bore. I have yet to see one that loading to mag length would touch the lands with any common bullet.

Great Answer, and Thank You for answering. I'm sure others were wondering what you answered, however I was asking about powder/primer combos and optimal performance with the above mentioned bullets from a semi auto with a short as legally possible,( w/o getting a stamp), barrel.

Doubt that they will get any where near the lands on a gas gun and stay mag length. Especially on a mass produced gasser.

Yeah, using the "economical" method suggested by $nipertime, I loaded a 168gr Amax into an empty shell and slowly chambered it in my Sig. Carefully removing it I measured 2.915". Given Hornady's max COL at 2.810" that leaves a freebore of 0.105". A buddy of mine in the hood has a Hornady tool for measuring, maybe get some more accurate measurements with it. While that may not be ideal. Could I load em long and and feed one by one for target work, or would 2.905" be too long? I could use not to have that 20-round mag hanging down at the bench anyway.

Yeah there is no problem doing that. But if it were me, I'd simply fund the best load possible at mag length since you are going to be shooting from a mag more often than not.
