Power Surge.....

Check with your power supplier, most will install surge protectors, at the source(meter), for a small monthly fee(around $10/mo.), and usually come with an equipment replacement(if it fails to protect) policy.

Spend your money on a good grounding circuit, make sure all your copper ground are tied together, . Think of it as a steel cage, you want the current an voltage to flow around an not thru your home. Telephone ,cable, EMC, your meter base all have ground rods, you want them all conected an a really good grounding point. Surge bars are not for lightning strikes or excess high voltages, over rated 130-140V, This is 40yrs. with EMC working on utlity lines, advice.

Well.

This should be a hoot!

Just got some kind of crazy ass surge which looks to have destroyed most of my electronics and appliances. I don't understand what happened-not a single circuit breaker popped, and everything was on surge protectors, but looks like most stuff from the fridge to microwave to the DVR and a couple of TVs are trashed.

Wondering if anyone has had this happen before. Where to start? EMC or general electrician, or what?

This is gonna suck.
it sounds like you lost a neutral.

Fortunately, everything came back fine.

It apparently was some kind of brown-out. Freaky. Never seen anything like it.
