That sounds like it is looking at the boot sector on the HD instead of the boot disk you made

It wouldn’t be an update to cause that unless it was a firmware/bios update. Since you can’t access the bios with external input devices, you can pretty much rule out Windows being the culprit. Most Bios for over a decade have had their own drivers to allow usb keyboards, to function pre-boot. As someone mentioned prior, it sounds like your usb controller ghosted.

This is probably the right answer.

Update: Dropped it off at the Microsoft Store where they are going to pull the data, reinstall Windows, and then move data back, for free. 2-3 days. The guy wasn't real optimistic that it would work though. Hope so, if not, oh well, hopefully I can just get my data.
I had to actually make an appointment with them, to fix a problem they caused. I guess now I know a little more what it's like to be an Apple customer.

Keep us posted about what they say caused the issue.
My son is having intermittent problems with hdmi video output to TV after update on a Dell Laptop.
