If you are concerned about cost think about this.

Firearms are like printers. It's not the cost of the printer, it's the cost of the ink cartridges. If you've ever had to buy ink cartridges you know what I mean.

You sound like you're set on .308 and it's a great round but one thing about that cartridge is that it ain't cheap to shoot on a regular basis unless you reload.

7.62x54R is cheap to practice with surplus ammo. Granted, it is corrosive, but that just means an extra step in the cleaning process.

Here's an example of the economics of shooting a high-powered rifle. Let's say you shoot 1,000 rounds a year. That's less than 100 rounds per month. 25 per week.

Gun Cost Ammo Cost Total Cost

.308 $800 $550 $1,350

54R $1,100 $250 $1,350

So you could spend $300 more on the initial cost of the rifle and still break even. And it makes more sense if you plan to keep the firearm more than a year. And let's face it, you're going to be hard-pressed to find what you're looking in .308 for $800.

Anyway, something to consider. But the above scenario is why I don't own a .308 any more. And once the VEPRs come down in price, I'm planning to get one. My PSL will have to suffice until then.

Good luck in your choice!

Thank you. This was kind of a sudden want and I haven't done much research of my options. I do know that I want a more "modern" type platform. I have tried numerous times to get into the whole surplus/military weapons and I always trade them off quickly. Just not for me. That is the primary reason for looking at the Hk91 type weapons.

6" at 250 yards? Off topic but: Why not AR15 with 20" 1/7-twist barrel firing 62-75 grain boolets? $1000 nearly gets you the rifle including 1000 rounds of ammo?

Yeah, just pointing out that it doesn't have to be dead nuts/"sniper" rifle accurate, but able to hit the broad side of a barn. And, I have an AR-15 already. Want something different.

Hands down best value in semi auto 308 is an out of the box unconverted Saiga.. fully capable of 700 yards with 16" barrel, just slight holdover (vs 20" model) and it's fairly nimble and lightweight. You should be able to find for +/- $600.

HK Clones are hit-miss unless you go PTR models, which push the $1k price tag. Nice that HK mags are only $4 each. But I would go AR10 (DPMS or M&P10) for same money as PTR before going the HK Clone route, as they are more customizable and you can perform upgrades, barrel swaps and repairs yourself (unlike the HK).

Kinda starting to lean towards an AR10. Although I had a C93 and loved it, so was wanting to go w/ a 91 clone. But, valid points raised about repair and customizability.
