Recommendations on a rifle.

It's an amazing facility and less than 2 hours from Atlanta. Plus, you make up an hour so leave at 715 EST and arrive by 8am CST. Steyr has classes for AUG, Scout, and their precision rifles. Get a PRO THB or a Scout with a free class is like getting it for a $650 discount. Plus they will teach you everything about the gun and how to shoot it well and get in class discounts (20%) on Steyr accessories. Richard Mann (who wrote the book on Steyr Scout) and Il Ling New fly in from Gunsite to do the Scout course.

Have you thought about just mounting a 1-4 power scope on it? You still get zero magnification, if you want. There are some pretty reasonably priced options also.

Scope, for $285: ZEISS "Terra 3X" variable 3x-9x, w/42mm lens.

Featuring Carl Zeiss engineering and QC, the shockingly good, shockingly inexpensive Terra line is built in Asia but performs way out of its price class. Properly ground, polished, and coated lenses give outstanding clarity, light transmission, color purity, and of course minimal distortion.

It's # 7 on this list of 10 best scopes under $300.

This scope would leave you $350 to spend on your rifle.
Ruger American, maybe?
