Refinish wood stock- polyurethane vs. oil?

How much porn did you watch in the 70’s?..

p.s. I hope the shoulder is healing... Was it your right shoulder? They say most shoulder injuries were caused from watching excessive porn in the 70’s!!
LOL! Repetitive stress injury. Nah, doing much better. First night after the nerve block wore off I was screaming at the top of my lungs. About to head off to the ER for morphine but Doc called me and said, "Double up on oxy and take an extra 800 mg of Advil. That made it tolerable. Now I'm down to about two tabs a day for pain relief so it's getting better. Can't use the arm yet but am typing a little for work. Have to pick up my arm and place it on the keyboard though. Little steps. Glad it's over with (except the PT).

burn it....
no really, burn it. i did an old shotgun and used a torch on the stock. i sanded it down to the raw wood, and burned it just enough to turn it black, scuffed it with scotch brite and the cleared it. turned out beautiful.
so much so i traded a $100 single shot for a $300 pistol even. and he offered the trade...

On the last stocks I refinished I used TruOil, though you can get similar results with tung oil. These pieces were hand rubbed with 4 coats of oil. The finish hads a nice satin shine, not overly glossed.

That is very nice, and very natural! What did you do to prepare for the Truoil? Did you Sand with a Higher grit sandpaper first? How about In between coats?

I am looking to finish a wood stock on an old .22 rifle. Back when I was doing a lot of woodworking, I would sand, apply stain, and polyurethane with more sanding, poly, repeat, etc.

Why is it that a lot of stock refinishing I see use stain and then oil instead of polyurethane? Is there a preference for oil for guns vs. poly?
Boiled linseed is the only way to go...

I sanded it with 320 grit to get it down to bare wood, and then hit it with 600 grit to smooth it out. Between coats of oil I used 0000 steel wool to smooth out any imperfections.
