Refinishing Chinese sks stock

I wanted to keep that “been there, done that” look. Really didn’t want to sand her down and refinish her

just put on the first coat of blo and mine looks very similar to yours if not a tad more worn. I completely agree, love the battle worn look. I’ll post pics after a few more coats.

I bought one from classic a few months ago, came with a pretty bad crack in the stock.
I spread the crack with toothpicks and flushed the whole stock with boiling water a few times to melt the cosmoline out.
Used some superglue for the crack and sanded down the beat to hell stock and stained and clear coat it.
Turned out real nice

awesome! You have any pics? I’m deliberately leaving mine messy but it would be cool to see what it would looks like if I took the time to fix it up.

As for your Albanian question; even though these are Chinese the batches I've seen lately have been used in Albania. All trenchart I have seen from the PSA ones have Albanian script. I think that holds true to Classic's too.

And yes, there are Albanian SKS's too but are less common.

... as for refinishing, I am a fan of not doing so. If it were mine I'd simply degrease using odorless Mineral Spirits and maybe leave the wood in a black trashbag in the sun to leach out the cosmoline.

Thanks everyone for your ideas and best practices for refinishing. I decided to use a very small amount of stain (early American, I didn’t have walnut on hand) and immediately wipe away. After that and 3 coats of BLO I think I’m satisfied. Before I did any of this I used a mixture of first citristrip (not a huge fan, thought it might be less harsh on the wood) And then boiling water to remove the remaining stain.
