Bear with me here. I am not an AR guy. If I got to plink I grab a 10/22, RA Rimfire, 9mm problem solver….. I reload and shoot “hunting rifles” for fun. I always hunt a light trim sporter bolt action or single shot. I hate hunting with an AR, my preference only so no cursing or flinging poop.

Hit me with recommendations for a repel boarders and invaders only AR or AK variant. Should I stick with 5.56 or go up? What optics? Can’t be too heavy as I do have some physical limitations. Should I scrap it and go with my 870 ghost maker?

Invaders for your house or do you have land? For me personally, I would much rather have a shotgun vs an AR for inside the house. For outside a 5.56 will handle most anything and you can put together a "relatively" light one. I mean 308 would be awesome it just depends how much is too heavy for you.

House now. Land in a year. My mobility factor will not change. I cant actively engage hostile forces. Hopefully I could fall back to a defensive position. I can jog briskly for about 50 yards on flat ground before my pulmonary function says “**** this” and chokes me out. If it comes to something like that I will be hunkered down as a human shield for the wife and kids. Maybe hunt in a pinch if I had to.

Anyone running a shorty in 6.5 Grendel or 7.62 x Commie.

14.5 BCM, 13 inch MLOK rail, flashlight, decent quality LPVO like Steiner 1-4, vortex PST GENII, or primary arms GLX.
Think a CQB rifle you could hunt if you had to. My broke down azz will not be engaging hostile. Nice Dot? Good enough light to stun an enemy.

I think the availability of everything 5.56 makes it a go, for this purpose. The .308 AR is nice, but can't deny the weight difference. This is all I'll say, JMO. Broad topic, it will begin soon, I'm sure. Good luck.
It wouldn’t be a high volume shooter. It would be a tool, like a hammer in your tool box.

Go for a cheap ar pistol in 556 ( 10.5 barrel) get some magpul flip up sights, and sig red dot from palmetto state arms. Get some trigger time behind that set up, and if you see it’s something you just aren’t into , then you can sell it for almost what you have in it. Good luck.

If I go PSA all the ODT AR Gods will pee on me and laugh. I haven’t recovered from the last time they peed in my butt.

I'll pitch in here.

You're asking 2 questions. Platform and caliber.

Caliber? Bigger is better. Consider something in 30 cal. If you're a reloader, 300BLK is fun and it's a small-ish cartridge. And the powder load is about half that of a 308, so it's economical to reload. If you ever get bored with reloading for it, there's are plenty of commercial ammo options too. Recoil is very civilized.

Platform? If you don't like AR platform, there are a few other options (although the best platform for 300BLK *would* be an AR). 300BLK gives you the option for very short barrels too without losing ballistic efficiency. A subsonic 300BLK round has about the same kinetic energy as 45ACP.
