Getting closer! Used a Brownell's A1 style lower. It was a "blem" because they marked the right side but I don't care since the left side engravings aren't USGI anyway. I bought some battleworn handguards from that eBay seller. I like em.

I think I'm getting some parts for Christmas so I'm probably not going to have anymore updates for a month. Not sure how correct I want to get with the LPK. Do I want to spend upwards of $200 for the correct selector, takedown pins, etc? I think I may just go with a good LPK and call it a day...

I’m not really an AR guy but the ones I do own are retro. The Vietnam era to me was the best time in its history. Not counting the ammo powder switch which caused the early issues . Just the look and feel.

The XM177 is by far my favorite . Perfect size and handy. Then you got big mama ... the M16A1 .

The XM177 got a little toasty on full auto, a three round burst control would have been nice back then, plus we were still using the 20 round mags. But it was easier to carry and use in deep bush:thumb:

Hey, thanks for your service ! That 100% Vietnam humidity did not help much either . Like a sauna

So I got this Brownell's stripped lower and I was thinking about a battleworn/BFPU look for it. But I wasn't sure if I wanted to scuff a new lower...

I got a lpk with a SERIOUS POS bolt catch pin...and scratched the hell out of the lower when I had to drive it back out. OK, that answers that...BFPU finish it is...

I scuffed the lower with an assortment of green scrub pads, steel wool, and 100 grit sandpaper. 100 grit!!! And I threw/ground the lower into a bunch of gravel in the backyard. That black anodizing is BEYOND TOUGH. I was/am impressed and amazed.

Well...the black still doesn't quite match the upper...so I bought some Brownell's dark gray Aluma-Hyde. I've been patiently waiting for warmer weather before I spray it but after sitting at work all day and reading @JDS556762's combloc build thread, I couldn't come home and just leave it alone any longer.

So I heated it and the paint can in some hot water, dried it with a blow dryer, and now it's drying in my master bathroom with a space heater on it. I'm sure the wife will have some comments when she gets home in a few minutes, HA!

I think the gray isn't going to match 100 percent but it will be close enough for my needs, especially once it's cured and scuffed again. The rest of my parts are being delivered by Santa...sooooo hard to be a good boy and stay off the naughty list!

By the way, the selector was a piece of junk also, so it's been replaced with a Colt selector. What an amazing difference. The front pivot pin is a piece also, I have another pair of those coming...

Ok...I didn't let the Aluma-Hyde cure long enough before I started hitting hit with a scrub pad. So the Aluma-Hyde started peeling off. And I also realized that if it did work out correctly, the black anodizing would show through.

If I had it to do over again, I would have just had the lower blasted to bare metal, then sprayed with Aluma-Hyde. I also would have filled the right-side selector markings.

So...I resprayed the lower. I purposely didn't cover it 100 percent and make it perfect. This time I cured it in the oven--4 hours @200. I'll say that it is impressive stuff. Once it cures, it's a tough finish. It's more green than I like, but I'm ok with it.

With the Colt parts I got today, the rifle is 80ish percent complete. I have some new takedown pins coming...I think the ones I have now are low quality. The front one is garbage for sure.

I added the green seatbelt sling which I think is more correct than the black GI silent sling I had originally bought lol. I think I'm going to swap the large round fwd assist for a teardrop in the future and I think I will call it a day. I *might* try and scuff the lower some but I really don't want to screw it up and have to take it all back apart for another respray lol...
