I don't think anyone expects a movie to follow a book it is based on very closely......but damn! I just finished reading Star Ship Troopers and I bet Robert A. Heinlein is spinning in his grave. I have never seen a book butchered like this one was. The movie is so different that if you changed the name of the movie and a few people in the story you would not even realize it was based on the book. The movie was a shallow story that presented an inaccurate caricature of the "military" mind set. The book is a very thoughtful examination of the Military, government philosophy and society as a whole. Heinlein was a sharp guy.

If you have never read the book, I highly recommend it.

I love RAH's books,
I have almost all of them, only missing a few from my collection,
my 14 yr old loves to read em.

"The Puppetmasters" movie seems to follow the book a little better, and was changed some, but is a great movie.
although they just left out the first part of the book completely,

I've read the book probably a dozen times over the years. One of my all time favorites. The movie doesn't deserve to be associated with the book in any way.

I'm glad to hear this. I have avoided this novel for many years based on the terrible movie.

RAH had some kind of 'iffy' novels late in his career, but Troopers isn't one of them. This is a good story, written when he was at the top of his game.

Don't avoid the book!

It is outstanding!! Our society would be so much better off if people had to earn their right to vote.

If the revolution ever really occurs, we must include the concept of earning a "franchise" in the new Constitution-and make that part impossible to amend!!

Typical Hollywood butchering. I heard they were remaking a Starship Troopers. No details in IMDB yet.
Great themes in that book. If you liked it, I'd also recommend "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress".

Agree 100% that the movie has absolutely nothing to do with the book other than the title and the barest similarity to the plot. Verhoeven makes some fun movies, but I'll never forgive him for that atrocity. Puppet Masters was more faithful to the book; too bad they picked an actor whose only acting skill is standing around with his mouth open to play the lead.

I read Starship Troopers a couple of months ago, and have since read more of Heinlein's books. So far Starship Troopers is my favorite. Im currently reading Farnham's Freehold and its pretty good so far. Another Heinlein book I would recommend would be Tunnel in the Sky, espically for all of you survivalist out there.
