S&W 38 vs S&W 38 Special

I picked up a very old (old like 5 digit serial #) S&W snubbie. I would like to find out what year it was made along with more about the round. It is a 38 S&W, not to be confused with a 38 S&W Special. Can I still purchase S&W 38 ammunition?

Any input is appreciated

Most gun stores will have it. It's not too expensive and little recoil. It was very common...about a 100 years ago.
