Customer brought this into the shop for cleaning and inspection/ test fire. Said it was passed down from some family member. I pretty sure its a Remington model 10. Has "San Quentin" stamped into the left side of the receiver, and Ordinance numbers on the trigger housing and bottom of receiver. The barrel doesn't have any type of front sight, and looks like its been cut down. I cant seem to find any information on if they used Model 10's at San Quentin, or how the guard guns were marked. Do yall think its it's legit or bubbas backyard chop job and someone got bored with a set of letter stamps?

Is that top strap securing screw with locking screw missing?

Hand cut checkering, and metal to wood fit, and an english style straight stock all suggest an expense fedgov would not have tolerated in those days. If the bore has even the least indication of pitting, I would not fire it. It's value will not change if it is not fired. However, It is a most interesting piece, thanks for posting!

I found this picture titled San Quentin Prison Guns. No date given. I believe these are Remington model 10 on the right side of the picture. I colorized it to see if it would help identify them.
