Self Monitored Alarm System...

Exactly, not everyone needs or wants their system monitored. I'm going to have a separate system of cameras that I can view remotely. That way, if we are not home and I receive a text that our alarm has been triggered, I can look at the cameras and see if someone has broken in and that I need to call the cops for a confirmed break in, or if my dog has knocked over a chair and set off the motion detector and I can turn off/rearm the system remotely.

We have three dogs and they are the best alarm system but since we are ITP and I travel a lot for work, having the alarm system gives me a little more peace of mind when my wife is home alone. The ADT signs are worth something IMO and if I were to have an unmonitored system I would invest in some ADT signs off eBay. Of the homes broken into around our area, none of them had an alarm sign in their yards.

Cameras act as a great deterant too. I would like to setup a camera system myself.

Absolutely, the fortress alarm comes with signs, but I think ADT signs are a little more universally feared by criminals and a great investment.

I agree on the dogs too.

For the cameras, I'm gonna pick up a few of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00EJ...1_1?colid=3W3OF6U05IXLZ&coliid=I1TDRJUU5GQW1R

Plus this nvr: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00VM...1_3?colid=3W3OF6U05IXLZ&coliid=I1ZR7WEV8QRNDC

Are the camera's powered by the NVR or do you have to run power and coaxial (?) cables to each of the cameras? Then do you connect to the NVR with an external HD or connect directly to a cloud service so you can view from an app?

We have wireless monitoring devices too. However, with the dogs we can't use the door glass breakers because they're noisy bitches sometimes. That sucks as of course motion won't work either so we are stuck with open/close magnet sensors.

Edit: Why is "B!t(HES" starred out? All of my dogs are females. Seriously.

our inside cat has to be locked in a room when we leave because sensors, stupid ass ADT rep when installed said oh no worries takes 50lbs to set off alarm,2 hours away 1st week, yup cat set it off,so now she gets locked in a bathroom!

We have ADT at home and work. When the alarm at the shop goes off either place I get an immediate text. When it goes off at the shop I can throw on clothes and be at the shop in 5-8 mins. I normally call 911 when Im enroute and tell them what Im driving. Normally they haven't been notified yet. One night when the officer got the call and was in the store across the street. Im just saying I have little faith in the monitoring portion.
