If you put the water in the bowl and then add hot rocks until it boils. Gotta be very hot rocks and not ones from a stream.

That would be a tough way and hard to boil for a period of time.

Can you boil water in a wooden bowl?

yes.

you can heat stones in the fire and drop them in the water, the water absorbs the thermal shock, and the wood will not burn. You can cook this way also.

You can also build a pit that keeps the fire away from the wood, and heat the water that way, it takes longer but it can be done,

The other thing I didn't mention is that true survivalists build first thing a hearth that will protect your fire, and provide some dry wood/tender. Again it seems to be a rule that once they get a fire going, they have to leave it out in the open where the first rain can put it out. Maybe one out of 20 will do something to protect their fire.
