Funny how no one has actually contradicted any of the negative points I've made about shotguns. I'll list them again.
1) Hard recoil. Either that or very heavy. Sometimes both.
2) Low capacity.
3) Very slow reloading.
So, good with a muzzle-loader then?If you do your part, perp is dead after the first shot, so all three of those kind of dont matter?
It has its role and limitations like anything else. For defense of my home and close proximity around it, I feel confident with my shotgun.
I covered these points, ad nauseam, in multiple posts here over the years. I’ll rehash them when I revisit arguments about 9mm vs .40 vs .45, AR vs AK, and similar disagreements that settle nothing but anger everyone.

Overkill is bad now? I thought it was good. Is it some kind of non-specific gender thing? Finally! A valid point. A shotgun hit's much harder than a 5.56, but is it worth the trade off for the other flaws? Dead is dead and stopped is stopped. Everything else is overkill.
Nah... no anger here, just boredom. None of it makes a helluva lot of difference anyway. Just neutralize the threat by whatever means available, and visit Starbucks the next morning.
"I’m good with it."I guess you need to define “self defense”. When I hear that term I think home invasion.
I hear what you are saying about the AR platform but my BENELLI M4 beside my bed just feels good. Maybe because I grew up shooting automatic shotguns for years before I ever touched an AR? Is it the best? Maybe, maybe not. But I know where the safety, bolt release and every other control feature is...in the dark.
And I wouldn’t wanna be you if you entered my home and I have my BENELLI. With a mag full of 00 and slugs in an extended tube it is a fearsome weapon. It will unload that tube so fast it sounds like one continuous boom. I have no doubt that it would take a big crowd to get through a doorway I’m pointing it at.
I’m also thinking no fool would try it after seeing the effects of it on the first few.
An AR at home defense ranges will kill...but it will also fly right through the target and not spend all its energy on the target.
00 buck or slug is in its happy zone at “in the room” ranges. And no AR points as naturally as a shotgun...it’s an aimed weaponed not designed for instinctive shooting like a shotgun.
I figure if I can kill a quail that flushes behind me in a split second then I can probably get some lead in a human. In a hurry.
I guess I’m counting on 2 or 3 idiots, meth heads or whatever, in an home invasion situation...no need for 30 rounds or fast reloads. If it’s more than that then my sidearm will have to come into play. And while the enemy is trying to crawl over the carnage of an empty BENELLI (if they are that stupid) then I think I’ll have time to engage with the backup handgun. That’s my plan anyway...and I’m good with it.
Must be some reason the military and police use shotguns for close quarters.
If you are really discussing a combat situation then that’s a whole nother ballgame.
If it keeps this thread alive for the next few minutes, so be it.Changed my original wording. Better?

Oh, if only!Still - even a shotgun could've beaten Hillary in the general.
