Should parents be jailed if their children have access to their firearms and use them in a shooting?

Should parents be held responsible if their kid takes their firearm and commits murder?

A parent should be responsible for their children's actions. Unless it is documented that the child has extenuating issues and you can show that you have done everything within your power to control them, then not just school shootings but anything your dependent child does is directly due to the way you raised them (or failed them).

My first pissed off impulse is to say YES! But then I start thinking about how the rabid anti gunners in this country will abuse this. Red flag laws are already a big issue. Where would this form of punitive justice end? Do we charge the parents of a 16 yr old kid who kills someone while driving recklessly? Or if a friend drowns while the kid has a house party when the parents are away? What if a kid gets in to the parents medicine chest and snags some pain meds and the girlfriend O.D.'s and dies? Way to many variables for me to support this across the board. But It does seem to fit in this case.

Some completely different scenarios there. Driving recklessly, yes. Charge the parents. Drowning? Could be a complete accident. If the child was at fault and did something irresponsible to cause it then yes, charge the parents. Our society is in a complete shambles today because of lack of parenting in my opinion.

Your kid has been questioned by the FBI in the past for threatening to shoot up a school and you supply him with an ar15 rifle, hell yes. You should be charged with the full murder rap, perhaps even more than the kid, those people would still be alive if you did not put that gun in his hands. And if the "gift" was before he was questioned about the threats you still should have made damn sure he did not have access to a firearm.

  • Colin Gray gave his son an AR-15 style rifle as a gift, two law enforcement sources said. It's unclear when he gave the gift, but it was after authorities interviewed the father and son last year in connection with threats to carry out a school shooting,

This is the main variable in this instance. Father absolutely bears burden of blame at least to some extent.

Regarding opinion on the topic as a whole: Introduce them to firearms early and educate them properly from the beginning. This will take away a measure of the forbidden fruit complex surrounding the gun in the house. If they are around it and have highly supervised interaction with it, there is a much lower chance they'll seek it out of wherever you keep it locked up to see "what all the fuss is about." And, God forbid, they do get their hands on it, they will be more likely to handle it safer than a child with no familiarity with guns.

That being said, to not have them secured in a manner that prevents a kid from having easy access would be reckless until they've reached a certain age, maturity level, and measure of competence. Mileage may vary on that one. We know a lock won't keep a thief out, but it will keep the honest man honest. Similar principle.

Factored in with fear of consequences in the general sense, not just pertaining to firearms, and there shouldn't be much issue. This is how it was done for generations and for the most part folks ended up fine.

Lastly, and I hate to quote myself, but I don't feel like rephrasing it. So here's my statement in the now locked thread:

Parents bear a responsibility in their kids actions, especially until a certain age, but any of us who have lived enough and know enough people understand that sometimes there's nothing they could have done. Sad and tragic for them. But it is what it is. No amount of spankings, talking to, coddling, not coddling, would have made any difference....

I thought this would be good to kick around. It’s really a tough call as most of us keep our firearms locked up if we’re not using them. Others have them laying around everywhere like back in the day. We had guns and would go shoot all the time as kids. This country has really mind ****ed our youth. Starts at the top and that’s the White House.

The school shooters parent is being charged. This is the second case in a shooting that I know of that the parents are being charged in connection to the murders. Is this just or not? Should parents be held responsible due to kids getting access to their firearms and committing murder?
Allegedly he bought him that ar after being investigated 1 year before for school threats.
