While in the woods hunting/fishing and not having to worry about pass through (hitting an unintended target), I would go FMJs. You get reliability, penetration and the cost savings as well.

If it's hogs and bears that you're loading for, go with 230 gr FMJ for penetration. That's the important factor on large animals. Hollow points may expand before they reach the vitals and not stop the threat.

I think I'd STILL want a .45 handgun bullet to expand, to rip a wider wound channel, and to create more sideways shock (hydrostatic shock-- and bigger, wider bullets displace more fluids to the side).
But it's true that this means giving up some penetration.
What do the ballistic gelatin tests show for the .45 ACP defensive hollow-point loads that you're considering and can get now in this ammo-shortage time?
