Smell elk

I've heard people talking about how you can smell elk if they're in, or have been in an area. So my question is, how long does that smell linger? Is it only there while they're close? Does it last for several days after they've moved on?

I’m sure they talking about when they rutting and males ( bulls) have pissed all on themselves.i have smelled whitetails while hunting during the rut.

Elk have a distinct odor and yes you can smell them at times. At least that’s my experience from time gone by
