I picked up this little beauty recently and I’m curious as to what model it is and year it was made. I’m pretty sure it’s been refinished but not positive. All the numbers do match and it’s chambered in “32 Long CTG” (32 s&w long as we know it today but I’m sure most of you know that). If I can provide any specific details or pictures of the markings to help identify it just let me know. Any help is much appreciated!

I’m not sure if it has or not, I’m not a smith expert I’ve just recently gotten bit by the big though lol. What could I look for to be able to tell if it has been refinished?

Hand Ejector Model of 1899, I’m not sure which Change but I’m guessing Change of 1905.
If it were a square butt it would be a Registered Police if memory serves.

It’s an I frame which is the predecessor to the J frame.

This seems to fit except the patent dates on the top of the barrel don't seem to match what I can make out in your pictures. This is from the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson 4th Edition.

I went and got my models and changes confused. Thanks for the clarification.

I’ll have to check the top markings and serial number when I get back home and compare! But if I remember correctly I think the serial number falls within the range given in your article there. The pictures I posted weren’t the best and I can’t make them out myself lol. Thanks for all the comments guys I appreciate all the help!

Smiths of that era can be difficult to date. The serial number on the butt of the grip will be the best way to approximate the age of the gun. The serial number should match the serial number on the cylinder, and the barrel flat. I can't quite make out the serial number on the picture of the cylinder. If the Smith is an original nickel model, look on under the grips and see if there is a "N" stamped under the left grip panel. The finish looks good, and from the pictures, the stamping on the barrel looks crisp and does not appear to have rounded edges. I can't make out the logo well enough to see if it looks crisp. If refinished, the stamping would appear to be rounded, edges of the frame not sharp, and again, there would not be a "N" stamped under the left grip panel. The grips are not original.
Not an expert, but that is what I would be looking to find.

I do know all the numbers match on the cylinder, butt, and underside of the barrel. Ill try to get some clearer pictures of the stamping and post them. I’ll also take the grips off when I get home and look for the “N”. Thanks!

No “N” stamp so it has been refinished in its lifetime. Some signs of old pitting under the grips as well but that doesn’t bother me I’m not a serious collector I just like cool old stuff lol. Some of the stamping on top of the barrel isn’t crisp and slightly “rubbed” off. All the screws are very clean and haven’t been messed with so that’s a plus in my book. Serial number is 543xx so according to @fshjrm’s catalog it is within the “.32 Hand Ejector Model of 1903-2nd change” range. Thanks for all the help fellas!
