Snake skin -- what kind?

Is it possible to identify a snake just by looking at the skin?

Found this snake skin sticking out of a retaining wall next to my house today. The rest of the skin is still inside the railroad tie. Never noticed the deep hole it was in until now!

Looks like a nice little den.

This is the only piece of the skin I could retrieve. He sure tied himself up in knots getting out of it.

Yeah, I dont think that's the back half.
Non-poisonous have a single row from head to anal plate then double row to tail.
Poisonous have a single row of scales their entire length.

Biker is prob right on Black rat snake since it's very common and the small scale pattern with hints of black.
The skin looses color before they shed
